When does my child commence school?

Non-compulsary Education

If your child will be 4 years old by 30 June they can go to Kindergarten. In Western Australia, Kindergarten is non-compulsary.

Immunisation requirements

Your child can only go to Kindergarten when they meet Western Australia’s immunisation requirements. This helps to better protect our children and community from vaccine-preventable diseases. The same immunisation requirements apply to Kindergarten at a school, a community kindergarten and a childcare service. If you would like to know more about the Kindergarten immunisation requirements or immunisation services visit HealthyWA.

Compulsory Education

Children of compulsory school age must enrol at school and attend every day. Compulsory schooling starts in Pre-primary when they turn 5 years old by 30 June and finishes at the end of Year 12.

  • They must be enrolled at a school from Pre-primary until the end of Year 10. In Years 11 and 12 (the final 2 years of compulsory schooling) they can:

  • Enrol at a school

  • Be in approved training
